Already Missing Camp

I got back home from camp Friday evening, and I am already missing it.

The week went by so fast, I am sad that it's over already.

I arrived there on Saturday, June 12th, with a friend who was also serving. After getting settled, we went to Taco Bell for some dinner. I had been craving Taco Bell for quite a while, so that was perfect.

Sunday, the other STMs (short term missionaries) arrived, and we had training, lunch, more training, and a bonfire in the evening.

Monday, we had some final training, got ready for the families to arrive, and the families arrived that afternoon.

I did not have a camper, as I was serving in the sweet shop (which is where I served at the last retreat I went to), but it was still fun meeting and cheering for the families that arrived.

We had an ice cream social that afternoon, and a meeting just for STMs, to talk about how the day went.

Tuesday, we had morning devotions, breakfast, and everyone went about to different things in the morning. I helped bake some things for when the sweet shop opened that afternoon (brownies and brookies--half cookie, half brownie treats), and then I was able to sit in on some of the activities the campers were doing.

The campers made a beaded cross keychain, and then played this game where one person had a bucket on their head, and another person had to try and get golf balls into the bucket.

At some point during the game, the director of the camp came by, and everyone was saying he should play. So, he put the bucket on his head and was ready to go.

I was then voted to try and throw the balls into the bucket, which was a little awkward for me, but it was fun. I didn't get any in, but that's ok. I enjoyed participating.

There was a carnival that evening, with typical carnival-style games, as well as bouncy houses, a horse-drawn carriage ride, a woman drawing caricatures, and a fire truck that everyone could check out.

I didn't play any of the games, but I did go on the carriage ride (horses are my favorite animals), and I got a caricature done of myself.

Wednesday, there was morning devotions, then in the afternoon I was in the sweet shop again. I helped with preparing for the parents dinner that evening, and then I got to check out the petting zoo. I love animals, so I enjoyed seeing the animals there (a pig, some baby and adult goats, ducks and chicks, rabbits, and chickens and roosters.

There was a dance on Wednesday evening as well, that I checked out. I danced a little, and watched the rest of the time.

Thursday, I helped out with a women's lunch, and got to eat with them as well. We had afternoon activities for the campers again, and in the evening there was a talent show and karaoke. I watched the talent show, and then hung out in the sweet shop for a bit.

We were right on the lake, so a couple of the days, I went down there to hang out a bit, when I needed a break. I love water, so being by the lake was so calming for me.

Friday, we had breakfast, helped the families pack, and then had a closing ceremony. STMs and families got to share what was on their mind if they wanted, and everyone was so thankful to have had the opportunity to come to camp.

The campers were given teddy bears, as a sort of parting gift from the camp, which I thought was sweet. There were a few left after everyone got theirs, and I was allowed to take one home for myself.

After the families left the STMs and leaders had a final debrief, where we talked about all that went on during the week, and how we were feeling. I am very shy, so I didn't say anything, so I just listened to what everyone else said.

All in all, I had an amazing time, and am so grateful that I was able to go this year, and I hope that I get to go again next year.

Seven More Days!!!

Joni and Friends Retreat is officially happening this year, and I am SO happy about that!!

I have so missed the camp, and the people there.

This year, there is three weeks of the Michigan retreat, as a special for this year because of how last year went.

Week one has started today (for the volunteers; the campers/families come tomorrow), week 2 (the week I am going to) starts next Sunday, and week 3 starts the Sunday after that.

I am SOOO excited!!

I am about halfway packed, and will finish packing throughout this coming week, as I don't want to put things in my suitcase until I absolutely have to.

Michigan is one of my favorite places to visit, and have so missed going there.

I was easily able to get the time off that I needed from work (my workplace is flexible with things like vacation and work schedules) a couple of months ago, so that has been one less thing to worry about, which is nice.

2019 was the first (and only, so far) time I got to go on a Joni and Friends retreat, and was able to make several friends there, as well as making some amazing memories, and I have been itching to come back and make more of these memories ever since.

The people that have put together this year's retreat have put things in place, so we can have a safe yet fun time at retreat, while still observing precautions that are in place, due to the pandemic. They were keeping in constant contact with the place we will be staying at, to see what the situation was in Michigan, to decide whether or not retreat would take place.

I am so glad things have improved/not gotten worse, so that we are able to have retreat this year, as I know many people would have been disappointed if it was cancelled for another year.

I am so looking forward to seeing my friends again, to make new memories, and to serve the campers/families that will be coming to camp!

Do you have any fun plans for the summer?

My Summer 2021 Bucket List

Summer is quickly approaching, which means warmer weather where we can do more things outside.

After the year we all had, I want to get back into doing things outside, going places, and seeing friends and family in person more.

I am normally an introvert, but I crave connections with people, and with nature. So, not being able to see others, or go to many places, was hard. I am so happy things are starting to take a turn for the better, and hopefully things can go back to as close to normal as possible in the future.

So, in no particular order, here is my summer 2021 bucket list.
  • Volunteer at Joni and Friends camp
  • Make s'mores
  • Ride my bike at least 2x a week
  • Go to the local farmer's market
  • Make lemonade
  • Clean my bedroom up
  • Paint my bedroom walls
  • Get new furniture for my room
  • Dye my hair purple
  • Have a game night with friends
  • Knit or crochet at least 2 items
  • Have a picnic in the park
  • Spend a day (or more) in the city
  • Visit my local zoo
  • Go to the movies
  • Paint
  • Have at least one spa day
  • Host a bbq
  • Draw with sidewalk chalk
  • Bake once a week
  • Go horseback riding
  • Practice playing the violin at least 3x a week
  • Watch a movie at a drive-in theater
  • Make homemade popsicles
  • Build a fort
  • Build and fly a kite
  • Go to the beach
  • Read outside
  • Visit a farm
  • Have a girls' night out/in
What is on your summer bucket list? Anything fun planned?

Current Me

Photography
One of my biggest passions, I am always looking for opportunities to capture something. I mainly photograph nature, as well as my cats, but would like to broaden my portfolio with other types of photos (portrait, wedding, party, etc.) as well.

Violin
I played the violin for a couple of years in elementary school, and then quit because I "got bored." I very much regret that decision, and am trying to get back into playing again. I recently bought a new violin, and have yet to play. I haven't played in over 20 years, so I am very rusty, but I am more than ready to learn how to play again.

Baking
Another passion of mine, I love making things, especially treats, so that I can experience the joy of other people enjoying my creations. I went to school for baking, and am hoping to one day work at a bakery, or a place that sells baked goods.

Arts and Crafts
I love making things, as I get to use my hands. My favorite crafts are photography, knitting, crochet, painting, and working with clay. I would also like to learn how to sew, write songs, learn how to play the piano, learn how to play the ukulele, learn how to play the guitar, and learn how to make jewelry.

Words
I love words, even though I have a hard time with them a lot of the time when I have to speak. Writing/blogging is the best way for me to get my point across, as it gives me enough time to think about what I want to say without the pressure of a time limit. One thing I would love to be able to do is to write and publish at least one book in my life.

Private
I am a pretty private person, so it takes me quite a while to open up to people. I don't really like to share much about myself, although once I feel comfortable with someone, I may tell them about myself (usually only if they ask).

Travel
I am a big homebody, but I also love to travel. I haven't been to many places, though, and would love to change that. New places, old/familiar places, there are many cities, states, and countries I would love to visit/go back to.

Shy/Quiet
I am a very shy/quiet person, and have been for as long as I can remember. It can be very hard for me to say what is on my mind, how I am feeling, or to ask for help if I need it.

Games
I love games, and have quite a collection of board games, decks of cards, and video games. Ever since the pandemic started, I have been playing video games a lot more than I usually did before. It helps pass the time, gives me something to do, and allows me to relax when I need to.

My Current Playlist

I am always listening to music, as it helps me relax, and gets me through a tough time, or when I just need a pick-me-up.

I listen to a mix of country, Irish, pop, and Christian rock music, so there will be a mix of songs from each genre.

I switch between genres depending on how I am feeling at a particular time. For quite some time, I was only listening to Christian rock, and have starting listening to country music again. I am switching between both of these at the moment, as they are probably my favorite genres.

So, in no particular order, here are my current favorite songs:

  • Truth Be Told by Matthew West
  • Angels Among Us by Alabama
  • A Thousand Years by Christina Perri
  • Go Rest High on That Mountain by Vince Gill
  • Revolutionary by Josh Wilson
  • Free to Be Me by Francesca Battistelli
  • The Dance by Garth Brooks
  • Unanswered Prayers by Garth Brooks
  • Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle
  • I Believe by Andrea Bocelli
  • Because We Believe by Andrea Bocelli
  • God Bless Us Everyone by Andrea Bocelli
  • Go Where Love Goes by Andrea Bocelli
  • Remember When by Alan Jackson
  • A Place in the Choir by Celtic Thunder
  • The Unicorn by The Irish Rovers
  • 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) by Matt Redman and the Passion Band
  • Help is On the Way (Maybe Midnight) by TobyMac
  • I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe
  • Down to the River to Pray by Alison Krauss
  • I Will Wait by Mumford & Sons
  • You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban
What songs are currently on your playlist?

My Spring Bucket List

Now that spring is here, and that it is getting warmer (and nicer) out, there are more things I would like to do in the coming days/weeks/months.

I get bored very easily, and am always looking for things to do. So, hopefully with the nicer weather comes the motivation to do more of the things I want to do.

In no particular order, here is what I would like to do this spring.

Dye my hair purple
I have been wanting to dye my hair for ages, especially purple, as that is my favorite color. I tried doing this last year, but for some reason, it didn't work out. I used dyes that didn't necessarily need to have bleach used before, but I think because my hair is too dark, the color didn't show up. I am planning on trying again, with bleach/a hair lightening process, to see how that goes.

Ride my bike at least 2x a week
Bike riding is one of my favorite ways to exercise, and now that it is warming up outside, I can start riding my bike again. I want to try and ride 2 days a week, and go from there.

Work on cleaning up my room
I am not a neat freak, and my room is proof of that. I have had zero motivation to clean it up, though, and I want to work on that. I can never keep my room cleaned, and I am hoping I can figure out ways to change that, so I don't have this big of a problem anymore (I have a lot of stuff to go through, and it is overwhelming).

Crochet or knit at least 3 projects
I love to make things, but I don't do this nearly as often as I want to. The last things I made were a sweater for my dad, back in December, and a cape for myself (that isn't finished yet). Crocheting and knitting really helps me relax, and it is worth it when I see the finished product.

Practice cake decorating skills
I went to school for baking and cake decorating, and yet I have hardly used those skills. I think it is time I get back into the swing of things, and make it worth all the effort I put in at school.

Learn how to apply makeup
I have never bothered to apply makeup (or to just wear makeup in general), and I have been wanting to learn for a while now. I really want to get creative, and try different looks to see how it looks on me.

Plant veggies and flowers
Veggies and flowers tend to die after a while at the hands of my family and I, but I want to try again this year with a garden. I love seeing things grow, and to be able to get something out of planting things. I want to learn how to properly take care of plants, to have them live longer, and to have something beautiful to look at every day.

Read 3 new-to-me books
I love to read, and would like to branch out of my go-to genres/books, and read something new.

What are some things you would like to do this spring?

Joni and Friends Michigan Retreat-Heaven on Earth

This year, Joni and Friends is putting safety measures in place, so we can have retreats again.

I am so happy that we can (hopefully) have retreats again, as it is an experience you will definitely want to have.

At retreat, people with disabilities and their family can come for a week of fun, relaxation, and faith, where they can feel like they belong, without judgment.

The people there truly care about everyone, and go out of their way to make each person feel special, welcome, included, and valued as the person that they are.

I am going to week 2 of the Michigan retreat, which I got to go to in 2019. This year, they are having 3 weeks, so more families can experience the joy of retreat.

They are still in need of STMs (volunteers) to help out each week, so if you or someone you know is interested, you can go to the Joni and Friends website HERE, go to the Ministries tab and click on Retreats and Getaways, then click on Family Retreat, where there is a list of all the retreats this year.

Please consider volunteering for Family Retreat. It is an experience of a lifetime that you will not want to miss.

You get to make new friends, see old friends, minister to those with disabilities and their families, and strengthen your faith at an amazing, beautiful campus.

You can check out Week 1 of the Michigan Retreat (June 7-11) HERE, Week 2 (June 14-18) HERE, and the special Week 3 (June 21-25) HERE.

These retreats really are like heaven on earth. I am so grateful that I got to go in 2019, and have been counting the days until I could go again!

Please share this information with anyone who may be interested in serving. They may have to cancel if they don't get enough volunteers, and I do not want that to happen. Safety precautions are being put in place, so that we can serve, and have fun, in a safe, secure way.

Joni and Friends does amazing work for people with disabilities all over the world, and these retreats are worth experiencing!

16 Questions

I got these questions from Girls' Life magazine, and decided to answer them in this post.

These are my own honest answers.

  1. What movie or book character do you relate to most?
Hmm...this is kind of a hard one. There are a few that I can really relate to, so it is hard to choose just one.

One is Matthew Cuthbert from the Anne of Green Gables series. He is soft spoken, doesn't really like to be around a lot of people, and prefers peace and quiet.
Another is Bilbo Baggins, from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series. He likes being at home more than anywhere else, he doesn't like being around a lot of people, he has a quiet nature. But he is also known to enjoy an adventure or festivity from time to time.
The third is Konstantin Dimitrich Levin from Anna Karenina. According to one description of him: "A classic introvert, Levin is happiest when he is alone to contemplate the world, engaged with thoughts that are often at odds with conventional wisdom. He avoids the city at all costs, preferring the solitude and authenticity of the countryside." Pretty much sounds like me.

  2. Do you consider yourself more of an introvert or an extrovert?
Definitely introvert. I get drained easily from interacting with people, I prefer to do solitary things, and I like peace and quiet.

  3. Which family member are you closest to?
Probably my dad. It used to be my mom, but once she died, I think I went to my dad more.

  4. What's your dream career?
Hmm....There are a few things I really want to do, and if they can be combined, I would be in heaven! Those are photography, baking, and writing.  If I could combine those in some way, then I would be very happy!

  5. What's your proudest moment?
There are a few moments that I have, that makes it very hard to choose from. But I think the one that I am probably the most proud of, as either graduating from college with my baking certificate (that took a lot longer than planned), or going on a trip completely on my own, with no help from anyone. I usually tend to want to go with someone, and have help with going on the trip, but with the trip I took by myself, I decided to step out of my comfort zone.

  6. What superpower would you want to have?
I can't pick just one, so the ones I would want to have are flying, teleportation, and invisibility.

  7. What is something you want out of a relationship?
I would really like to get an acceptance of who I am, of all of me. I am working on that myself, but I would love to have acceptance from another as well.

  8. What change do you want to see in the world?
I would like to see more communication, compassion and empathy in the world. Then, we would more likely be understanding of why people are the way they are.

  9. What's something you're afraid of?
My biggest fear is of death. I don't know if it's the process of dying, or the thought of being dead that I am scared of the most, but death is something that has scared me for a very long time.

The biggest fear after that, is speaking up. I am a very shy person, so I have a hard time talking to people I don't know, or whom I am not friends with. I am always worried about what other people would think, and it holds me back from saying a lot of the things I want to say.

  10. Who inspires you the most?
I think the person who inspires me the most is Joni Eareckson Tada. She has been through a lot in her life, yet she keeps going. She has a fighting spirit, and when she has a hard day, she isn't afraid to ask for help. Even with all she has been through, she has helped thousands of people around the world with her ministry, and is still going strong.

  11. What's your favorite memory?
My favorite memory is probably Joni and Friends camp. I went for the first (and only time so far) in 2019, and fell in love with the retreat. I didn't get to go in 2020, because of the pandemic, but as of right now, it seems like it will take place this year.

  12. What song means the most to you?
Truth Be Told by Matthew West. It says what I have had trouble putting into words for years.

  13. What goal do you have for yourself this year?
There are two big goals I have. One is to become healthier (physically, emotionally/mentally, and spiritually), and the other is to be more confident in myself.

  14. What's something you've always wanted to try?
One thing I have always wanted to try is to make macarons. I love to bake, so I would love to be able to make macarons one day.

  15. What values are most important to you?
The values most important to me are compassion, empathy, patience, respect, courage, forgiveness, growth, listening, learning, resilience, creativity, and balance.

  16. What motivational quote always keeps you going?
"If you want to fly, give up everything that weighs you down." by Buddha

It was hard to choose just one quote, but I really like this one.
